Understand in depth

Why it works, where it shows up in real life, and more.

An exponential function (f(x) = aˣ) describes growth where the rate of increase is proportional to the current size — the bigger it already is, the faster it grows. A logarithm is the reverse question: "to what exponent do I raise this base to get that result?" log₂(8) = 3 because 2³ = 8 — they're literally the same relationship, just read in opposite directions. Where exponential answers "how much is this worth after growing," logarithm answers "how long did it take to grow this much."

Why it matters

The logarithm's most useful property — log(a×b) = log(a) + log(b) — isn't a coincidence, it's the historical reason logarithms were invented: turning multiplication (hard to do by hand with big numbers) into addition (easy). Before calculators existed, multiplying two six-digit numbers by logarithm meant looking up two values in a table, adding them, and looking the result back up — far faster than long multiplication. That's also why logarithmic scales (Richter, decibel, pH) exist: they compress a huge range of multiplicative values into a small, addable interval.

Formula

Definition:  logₐ(b) = c   ⟺   aᶜ = b   (a>0, a≠1, b>0)

Properties:
  log(a×b) = log(a) + log(b)
  log(a/b) = log(a) − log(b)
  log(aⁿ) = n × log(a)
  logₐ(a) = 1
  logₐ(1) = 0

Change of base:
  logₐ(b) = log(b) / log(a)

Exponential function:  f(x) = a × bˣ  (growth if b>1, decay if 0<b<1)

Worked example

Solve: log₂(x) = 5

By definition, this means 2⁵ = x.

2⁵ = 32

x = 32

Check by definition: log₂(32) asks "2 raised to what gives 32?" Since 2⁵=32, the answer is 5 — matching the original statement.

Where this shows up in real life

The earthquake Richter scale and sound decibels are logarithmic — a magnitude 6 earthquake releases 10 times more energy than a magnitude 5, not "a bit more." Population growth, compound interest, and radioactive decay are exponential. Computer science constantly uses logarithms to measure search algorithm efficiency. pH in chemistry is literally a logarithm of ion concentration.

💡 Study tip

Whenever you see an equation with x in the exponent, the first question is "can both sides be written with the same base?" If so, the exponents can be set equal directly, no logarithm needed — it's the fastest route whenever it's available.

⚠️ Common mistake

Thinking log(a+b) = log(a) + log(b). The sum-of-logs property applies to MULTIPLICATION inside the log, not addition. log(a+b) has no simplified form — this is a common mistake because the product rule (log(a×b)=log(a)+log(b)) looks visually similar but applies to a different operation.

Fun fact

Before electronic calculators, engineers and scientists did complex math using slide rules — mechanical devices built entirely on logarithmic scales, which turned multiplication into simply adding two physical lengths. The slide rule was standard engineering equipment for over 300 years, including the calculations that put a man on the Moon in 1969.

Practice

Question: Solve: 3ˣ = 81

Show answer

Write 81 as a power of 3: 81 = 3⁴

3ˣ = 3⁴

Since the bases match, the exponents must match:
x = 4

Check: 3⁴ = 3×3×3×3 = 81 ✓

Frequently asked questions

What is a logarithm, in simple words?

It is the missing exponent. asks “2 to what power gives 8?”, and the answer is 3. The logarithm is the inverse of a power, just as a square root is the inverse of squaring.

What are logarithms used for in real life?

To find times in exponential processes (how long an investment takes to double, the age of a fossil by carbon-14) and to measure quantities that vary enormously, on logarithmic scales: pH, decibels and earthquake magnitude.

What is the difference between log, ln and ?

with no base written means base 10. is the natural log, base . is the log in base . They all follow the same rules, and the change-of-base rule converts one into another.

Do logarithms show up on the ENEM and the SAT?

On the ENEM and Brazilian entrance exams, yes: in exponential functions, interest and scales such as pH and Richter. On the SAT, exponential functions are common (growth, decay, percentages), but explicit logarithms are rare.

Estilo SAT

Entender a fundo

Definição:  logₐ(b) = c   ⟺   aᶜ = b   (a>0, a≠1, b>0)

Propriedades:
  log(a×b) = log(a) + log(b)
  log(a/b) = log(a) − log(b)
  log(aⁿ) = n × log(a)
  logₐ(a) = 1
  logₐ(1) = 0

Mudança de base:
  logₐ(b) = log(b) / log(a)

Função exponencial:  f(x) = a × bˣ  (crescimento se b>1, decaimento se 0<b<1)

Exemplo resolvido

Resolva: log₂(x) = 5

Pela definição, isso significa 2⁵ = x.

2⁵ = 32

x = 32

⚠️ Erro comum

Pratique

Questão: Resolva: 3ˣ = 81

Ver resposta

Escreva 81 como potência de 3: 81 = 3⁴

3ˣ = 3⁴

x = 4

Verificação: 3⁴ = 3×3×3×3 = 81 ✓

Perguntas frequentes

Logaritmo cai no ENEM e no SAT?
