Exponentiation is repeated multiplication of the same number — but what makes it interesting isn't the definition, it's the behavior: powers grow far faster than sums, and that speed difference is what separates linear growth from exponential growth. A root is the inverse operation: if 2³ = 8, then the cube root of 8 is 2. Every power property has a mirrored version for roots, because a root is a power with a fractional exponent — √x is the same as x^(1/2).
The rule for multiplying same-base powers by adding exponents (a^m × a^n = a^(m+n)) isn't arbitrary — it's a direct consequence of counting how many times the base repeats. a^m is a multiplied m times; a^n is a multiplied n times; multiplying the two is a multiplied (m+n) times. From that single idea — counting repetitions — every other property (dividing by subtracting exponents, a power of a power by multiplying exponents) can be derived, instead of needing to be memorized separately.
Multiplying same-base powers: a^m × a^n = a^(m+n) Dividing same-base powers: a^m ÷ a^n = a^(m−n) Power of a power: (a^m)^n = a^(m×n) Zero exponent: a⁰ = 1 (a ≠ 0) Negative exponent: a^(−n) = 1/a^n Root as a fractional exponent: ⁿ√a = a^(1/n) ⁿ√(a^m) = a^(m/n)
Simplify: (2³ × 2⁵) / 2⁴
First the numerator, adding exponents (same base being multiplied):
2³ × 2⁵ = 2^(3+5) = 2⁸
Then the division, subtracting exponents:
2⁸ / 2⁴ = 2^(8−4) = 2⁴ = 16
Notice that at no point did you need to compute 2³=8 or 2⁵=32 separately — working directly with the exponents is faster and sidesteps arithmetic errors with big numbers.
Population and investment growth (compound interest is pure exponentiation). Earthquake scales (Richter) and sound scales (decibel), which are logarithmic — the inverse of exponentiation. Computer science: storage capacity in bytes is always a power of 2. Radioactive half-life and how medication decays in the body.
Never try to solve a^m × a^n by computing each power first when the bases match — add the exponents directly. This avoids needlessly wrestling with huge numbers and is nearly error-proof.
Thinking a^m × a^n = a^(m×n), mixing up the rule for multiplying powers with the rule for a power of a power. They're different rules: equal bases being multiplied add exponents; a power raised to another exponent multiplies them. Mixing the two up is the single most common mistake in this entire topic.
An ordinary sheet of paper (0.1 mm thick) folded 42 times would be tall enough to reach the Moon — about 440,000 km. The math is just 0.1 mm × 2⁴². It sounds implausible because our intuition is trained to think in linear growth (adding), not exponential growth (repeated multiplying) — and that exact difference in behavior is what makes exponentiation so powerful, and so counterintuitive at the same time.
Question: Simplify: (3⁴)² ÷ 3⁵
First the power of a power, multiplying exponents:
(3⁴)² = 3^(4×2) = 3⁸
Then the division, subtracting exponents:
3⁸ ÷ 3⁵ = 3^(8−5) = 3³ = 27

Simplifique: (2³ × 2⁵) / 2⁴
