Intro to algebra

Intro to algebra: understand what an equation is, solve it step by step like a balance scale and avoid the sign errors that cost points.

Intro to algebra in 5 minutes

Algebra is arithmetic with an open question. In , the letter holds a number we do not know yet. Solving means finding the value that makes the sentence true without guessing: by doing the same operation to both sides, like a balance scale that must stay level.

Rule 1

The balance

Add, subtract, multiply or divide both sides by the same number (divide only by a nonzero number).

Rule 2

Distributive property

The number outside multiplies every term inside. With a minus sign: .

Rule 3

Like terms

Only terms with the same letter and the same exponent combine. Plain numbers combine with plain numbers.

Understand in depth

Why it works, where it shows up in real life, and more.

Algebra is arithmetic with an open question. Instead of "what is 3 + 5," you get "3 + x = 8" — the same operation, but now one number has a name (x) instead of a value, and your job is to find which value makes the sentence true. An equation isn't an instruction to compute; it's a statement that can be true or false depending on x, and solving means finding exactly which values make it true.

Why it matters

The reason "whatever you do to one side, do to the other" works is that an equation is a balance in equilibrium. Adding 5 to both sides doesn't change whether the scale is balanced — it only changes the numbers sitting on it. That means solving an equation is never "moving numbers to the other side," even though it looks that way: it's always applying the same operation to both sides until x stands alone. Understanding this prevents the single most common mistake, which is flipping the sign when "moving something across" without understanding why that works.

Formula

Linear equation:  ax + b = c

Solving:
  ax = c − b
  x = (c − b) / a,  a ≠ 0

Distributive property:  a(b + c) = ab + ac

Sign rule:
  (+)×(+) = +     (+)×(−) = −
  (−)×(+) = −     (−)×(−) = +

Worked example

Solve: 4x − 7 = 2x + 9

The goal is to isolate x — gather all x-terms on one side, plain numbers on the other.

4x − 7 = 2x + 9
4x − 2x = 9 + 7 (subtracted 2x and added 7 to both sides)
2x = 16
x = 8

Check: 4(8) − 7 = 32 − 7 = 25. And 2(8) + 9 = 16 + 9 = 25. Both sides match — the equation was only true when x = 8.

Where this shows up in real life

Any "how much is left" or "how much do I need" situation: how long until you save a certain amount, how many units to sell to hit a target, what grade you need on the last test to pass. Programming uses algebra constantly in formulas and conditions. Engineering and physics describe almost everything as equations to solve.

💡 Study tip

Always check your answer by plugging the value back into the original equation. If both sides give the same number, x is correct — it's a 10-second check that saves you from turning in a wrong answer because of an arithmetic slip along the way.

⚠️ Common mistake

Multiplying only one term when applying the distributive property: turning 3(x + 4) into 3x + 4, forgetting to multiply the 4 too. The correct form is 3x + 12. This mistake is sneaky because the wrong result still looks like a reasonable expression — it only breaks when you test it with an actual value of x.

Fun fact

The word "algebra" comes from the Arabic al-jabr, which appears in the title of a book written by al-Khwarizmi in the 9th century and roughly means "reunion of broken parts" — a direct reference to moving terms across the sides of an equation. The mathematician's own name, Latinized, gave us the word "algorithm."

Practice

Question: Solve: 5(x − 2) = 3x + 4

Show answer

5(x − 2) = 3x + 4
5x − 10 = 3x + 4 (distributive property)
5x − 3x = 4 + 10 (gathering terms)
2x = 14
x = 7

Check: 5(7−2) = 5(5) = 25. And 3(7)+4 = 21+4 = 25. Confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

What is an equation?

It is an equality with an unknown value. It is not an instruction to compute: it states something that may be true or false depending on . Solving means finding the values that make it true.

Is “move it to the other side and change the sign” correct?

It is a shortcut for the balance rule: adding or subtracting the same number on both sides. It works, but students who understand the balance make far fewer mistakes, especially when multiplying or dividing by negatives.

How do I check my answer?

Substitute your value into the original equation and see if both sides give the same number. It takes 20 seconds and catches almost every sign error.

Where does algebra show up on exams?

Almost everywhere: age and money puzzles in math olympiads, utility bills and phone plans on the ENEM, and linear equations make up a large share of the SAT Algebra domain.

Entender a fundo

  ax = c − b
  x = (c − b) / a,  a ≠ 0

Propriedade distributiva:  a(b + c) = ab + ac

Regra do sinal:
  (+)×(+) = +     (+)×(−) = −
  (−)×(+) = −     (−)×(−) = +

Exemplo resolvido

Resolva: 4x − 7 = 2x + 9

4x − 7 = 2x + 9
4x − 2x = 9 + 7 (subtraí 2x e somei 7 dos dois lados)
2x = 16
x = 8

Verificação: 4(8) − 7 = 32 − 7 = 25. E 2(8) + 9 = 16 + 9 = 25.

O próprio nome do matemático, latinizado, deu origem à palavra "algoritmo".

Pratique

Questão: Resolva: 5(x − 2) = 3x + 4

Ver resposta

5(x − 2) = 3x + 4
5x − 10 = 3x + 4 (distributiva)
5x − 3x = 4 + 10 (reunindo termos)
2x = 14
x = 7

Verificação: 5(7−2) = 5(5) = 25. E 3(7)+4 = 21+4 = 25. Confere.

Perguntas frequentes
