Answer:
Basic statistics that makes sense: mean, median, mode and spread explained with real data, so you can read tables and charts without falling for traps.
Statistics sums up many numbers with a few. Measures of center (mean, median, mode) say where the data sit; measures of spread (range, standard deviation) say how spread out they are. The key exam question is: which measure best represents this data? When there is a value far from the rest, the median is usually the answer.
Add everything and divide by how many there are. In a weighted mean, each value counts as many times as its weight. Handy trick: .
Median: sort the data and take the middle value (with an even count, the average of the two middle values). Mode: the most frequent value (there may be several, or none).
The standard deviation is the “typical distance” from the data to the mean. All values equal: . More spread out: larger .
Three quick questions. Pick an answer to see why.
What is the mean of , and ?
.
What is the median of ?
Sort first: . The middle value is . (The is in the middle of the unsorted list, which is the trap.)
What is the mode of ?
The appears three times, more than any other value.
Eight questions, from easy to exam level. At the end you get exactly what to review.
1. What is the mean of ?
Sum , divided by : . (Equally spaced values: the mean is the middle one.)
2. The mean of test scores is . Four of them are , , and . What is the fifth score?
Total sum: . The four add to . Missing: .
3. What is the median of ?
There are values (even): the median is the average of the two middle ones, .
4. The salaries (in thousands) at a small company are . Which measure best represents a typical salary?
The mean is thousand, pulled up by the ; no “typical” employee earns that. The median, thousand, is not affected by the extreme value.
5. The exam has weight and the project has weight . A student scored on the exam and on the project. What is the weighted mean?
. The simple mean () ignores the weights.
6. What is the range of ?
Largest minus smallest: .
7. Sets and both have mean . Which has the larger standard deviation?
In every value equals the mean: . In the values are spread away from the mean, so is larger.
8. If we add to every value in a data set, the mean:
Everything moves up , so the center moves up . The standard deviation and the range do not change: the spread is the same.
Try each one first. Then open one hint at a time, and only then the full solution.

Why it works, where it shows up in real life, and more.
Basic statistics is about summarizing a pile of numbers into one, without lying too much in the process. Mean, median, and mode are three different answers to "what's the typical value?", and picking the wrong one isn't neutral — it can completely distort the impression the data gives. Spread is the necessary complement: a "typical value" summary with no information about how scattered the data is, is at best incomplete.
The mean is sensitive to extreme values because it adds everything up and divides — a single very high or very low value drags the whole result. The median doesn't have that problem because it only looks at the central position after sorting, completely ignoring how far the extremes sit. That's why a country's "average" salary tends to be much higher than the "typical" salary most people actually earn: a handful of extremely high salaries pull the mean up, while the median keeps representing the real middle.
Mean (x-bar): sum of all values / number of values Median: middle value after sorting the data (if the count is even: average of the two middle values) Mode: most frequently occurring value Range: maximum − minimum Mean absolute deviation: sum of |each value − mean| / number of values
A team of 5 players has these heights in cm: 170, 172, 175, 178, 250 (the last one is the goalkeeper, exceptionally tall). Compare mean and median.
Mean: (170+172+175+178+250)/5 = 945/5 = 189 cm
Median: already sorted: 170, 172, [175], 178, 250 → median = 175 cm
The mean (189 cm) suggests a "tall" team, but 4 of the 5 players are under 179 cm. The median (175 cm) far better represents the "typical" player on the team, because it isn't pulled by the goalkeeper's exceptional value.
News stories about average versus median salary — and why the two tell different stories. Sports performance evaluation. Industrial quality control, which uses deviation to know whether a process is "under control" or varying too much. Election polls, which report not just the average but the margin of error — a measure of spread.
When you see an "average" in a news story or report, ask: could an extreme value be distorting this? If the answer is probably yes (income data, home prices, anything with potential for very outlying values), the median usually tells the real story better than the mean.
Confusing median with "half the mean" or some calculation involving the mean — they're completely independent concepts. The median never uses the sum of the values at any point; it only depends on order. Two data sets can have very different means and the same median, or the reverse.
The word "statistics" comes from the Latin status ("state"), because the discipline was literally born from governments collecting data about their populations for administrative and military purposes — the same root that gives us the word "state." What's now a scientific tool started out as census bureaucracy.
Question: A student's grades on 6 tests were: 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 10. Calculate the mean and median, and say which one better represents their performance.
Mean: (6+7+7+8+9+10)/6 = 47/6 ≈ 7.83
Median: already sorted, the two middle values are 7 and 8 → median = (7+8)/2 = 7.5
The two are close (7.83 and 7.5) because there's no extreme value dragging the data to one side — in this case it barely matters which you use, and that closeness itself is the signal of an undistorted data set.

Use the mean when the data are well-behaved, with no extreme values. Use the median when some values are far from the rest (salaries, house prices, waiting times): it is not pulled by them.
Rarely by hand. What usually comes up is comparing: which set is more spread out? The set with values farther from the mean has the larger standard deviation. Adding a constant to every value does not change the standard deviation; multiplying every value by multiplies it by .
The set is bimodal: it has two modes. If every value appears the same number of times, we say there is no mode.
The ENEM loves frequency tables, charts and the question “which measure best represents the data”. On the SAT it is part of Problem-Solving and Data Analysis. Olympiads use it in sum-and-mean puzzles.

Calcule a média e a mediana, e diga qual delas representa melhor o desempenho dele.
